Why choose Employee Assistance Programme?    Back to top

The reasons for adopting a Employee Assistance Programme (EAP) may be one or more of the following rationales:

"Drink related disease cost the economy £1.7 billion, and 8 million lost working days. Coronary artery disease and strokes cost a further £3.7 billion, and 91 million lost days. The cost to an average UK company of 10,000 employees is 73,000 lost working days, lost production of over £2.5 million, and even 42 deaths.

30 % to 40% of all sickness absence from work is attributed to mental and emotional disturbance."

The Employee Assistance Programme has much to offer in creating a high-quality contribution from employees at all levels. Any implementation of Employee Assistance Programme needs careful preparation, design, introduction, negotiation, operation and evaluation.

The emphasis is on 'tailor made', a Mind train strategy which recognises that every organisation is different and will wish to implement the programme in various forms and ways. The fundamental elements of the programme are; Primary Intervention, Secondary Intervention, and Personal Intervention.

Primary Intervention

Stress appraisal

The effective way of tackling stress is to eliminate it at source. Intervention is guided by prior diagnosis to identify these stressors. The diagnosis would usually also measure job satisfaction, coping behaviour, as well as physical and psychological health. This is a very effective way of identifying problematic areas for management review and subsequent direction. The diagnosis also provides a baseline whereby subsequent intervention can be evaluated.

Secondary Intervention - Self Empowerment Skills

Generally focused on training and education, and involves awareness-raising activities and skills training programmes.

Examples of group training

Relaxation

Lifestyle information

Planning

Decision making

Stress

Time management

Assertiveness

Problem solving

Self esteem enhancement

Positive attitude

Another key factor is the development of a supportive organisational culture, therefore, employees should not feel awkward about admitting to any difficulties. A strategy of health promotions will help to achieve this caring culture, and can take a variety of forms such as workshops, brief focused training and long term training programmes.
